The trick to building courage competency is to purposefully move outside of your comfort zone on a regular basis. Don't move so far out as to become petrified with fear, but enough that your body starts to give you the physiological cues that you've become uncomfortable. Moving into your discomfort zone is how you learn and grow. As Ginny Rometty, CEO of IBM, puts it, "Growth and comfort don't coexist."
Our company, Giant Leap Consulting, is a courage-building training firm. For more than a decade we have led courage-building workshops for thousands of executives across the globe, including sessions exclusively for women leaders. We have identified four types of courage that are crucial to effective leadership development:
- try courage
- trust courage
- tell courage
- take-in courage.
