Although I had one of the best years of my professional life last year by almost every measure, the far and away best part of that year was that I was able to stand on the big stage at the Hero Round Table and share my own story about confronting my greatest fears.
In that moment, I felt that I had come home in a lot of ways. I have always been fascinated by big screen superheroes, not merely as entertainment, but as guides and inspirations for every one of us in the real world.
I believe there is a hero in all of us, and there is a map embedded in those hero stories that we can use to become our best selves, to discover our talents, and to find ways to make our world a better place.
Joseph Campbell called that map, "the Hero’s Journey," and it is a powerful tool for our lives. In the Hero’s Journey, the hero challenges and steps out of their status quo, confronts their fears and develops their talents, and ultimately changes their world.
The map of the Hero’s Journey is absolutely true for every one of us in our journeys to become the very best versions of ourselves. In the beginning, we have to step out of the expectations and limits that others have for us, then hone our skills and strengths, and finally use the culmination of our experience to make a difference in the lives of the people around us.
The first step in the journey is to know and embrace what makes you unique. In each and every hero’s origin story, the hero learns the limits and potential of their powers. Each and every one of them has personal talents that power them to success in particular situations. To paraphrase David Rendall, what makes them unique makes them powerful.
You may feel more comfortable calling it your “competitive advantage,” but I believe that your unique talents are not only the keys to becoming the best version of yourself, but also point you toward your greatest hopes for the world around you. They are your yearnings.
How do you find what makes you unique? One place you can start is one or more of the personal assessments we offer: http://capedcoaching.com/choose-your-adventure/
In my experience, the most powerful of these is the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment. The Clifton StrengthsFinder identifies your unique talents. There are 278,256 unique combinations of your Top 5 Strengths, and only a one-in-33 million chance that somebody will have the same results in the same order.
If you are ready to become the very best version of yourself and to make a difference in the world around you, I’m ready to work with you.
