All in Beyond Hazing
It kind of stands out, doesn’t it? As you look at the navigation for the site, you may notice a handful of categories that fit well with the hero’s journey: "Building Heroes," “Heroic Arts," "Heroic Moment,” “Resources,” and “Values.”
But then there is “Beyond Hazing”.
So, what does hazing have to do with the hero’s journey?
This simple question calls forward our dreams, and nurtures our greatest potential. This simple question is frequently asked us at an early age, often by somebody who believes and invests in us, such as family members, neighbors, people in our faith communities, or teachers.
Unfortunately, that belief and investment can disappear as we grow older, and the people around us become consumed by their own agendas and worldviews.
We have done many of you a disservice in the ongoing debate about hazing in fraternities and sororities. As an undergraduate in the late 1990's, the education I received about hazing consisted of a list of prohibited activities, and I was told there was a zero tolerance policy against hazing. At the campus and inter/national organization levels, chapters were labeled as healthy/non-hazing organizations, or as unhealthy/hazing organizations. In other words, chapters either met the campus' or headquarter's minimum expectations, or they did not. But, by definition, to meet minimum expectations is to be merely mediocre.
